Seven Reasons to Move to North Highlands, CA

Krista Diamond | October 25, 2019 @ 12:00 AM

The underrated city of North Highlands, CA offers easy access to Sacramento, affordable cost of living, great parks, restaurants and even an aerospace museum. Oh, and let’s not forget classic sunny California weather. Whether you’re a Golden State native, a recent transplant or you’re just mulling over a move to Sacramento or one of its surrounding communities which include McClellan Park, Antelope, Citrus Heights, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove, Arden-Arcade—and of course, North Highlands—it’s important to be informed before you pack your bags. If North Highlands isn’t already on your radar, here are seven reasons why it should be:

North Highlands is Near the Revitalized McClellan Park

In 1995, McClellan Air Force Base closed, resulting in the loss of 11,600 jobs and the end of 60 years of military history in the Sacramento area. Fortunately, the former military site was not a ghost town for long; it became McClellan Business Park, a hub of office space that also now includes a master-planned residential community. Here you’ll find hundreds of businesses including Storelocal McClellan Park. McClellan Park sees over 15,000 daily visitors, and is estimated to eventually employ approximately 35,000 people, making it a great place to shop, work, do business and live.

Get Smart at American River College

Situated on a beautiful campus on Cameron Ranch just minutes from North Highlands, you’ll find American River College, a two-year community college with an enrollment of over 30,000. This school offers associate degrees in many programs including nursing, speech pathology, astronomy, nutrition, accounting and more. Most notably, American River College has a great reputation for facilitating transfers to four-year schools including California State University Sacramento, which is just 11 miles from North Highlands.

North Highlands is Close to Sacramento

Whether you’re commuting to Sacramento for work or just looking to spend the day wandering the riverfront area, North Highlands is just 12 miles from Sacramento. Make the short drive and you can stroll Old Sacramento Historic Park, go to the Crocker Art Museum, catch a game or concert at the Golden 1 Center, visit the Sacramento Zoo or taste wine at vineyards like Scribner Bend Vineyards and Frasinetti Winery. If you’re in the mood for a road trip, Lake Tahoe and the Pacific Ocean are both within reach of North Highlands.

Sunshine in North Highlands

The Golden State may be a reference to the Gold Rush and the state flower, but as far as we’re concerned, it also applies to abundant sunshine. In North Highlands, you can expect 14 hours of sun on an average July day, plus over 70 days a year of temperatures above 90. This is due to the nearby mountains preventing cool coastal air from reaching the Sacramento area. Fortunately, Stinson Beach is just 113 miles from North Highlands. You’ll definitely want to plan on making at least one trip during the summer.

North Highlands is Home to the Aerospace Museum

Spend the day walking among aircrafts at the Aerospace Museum in North Highlands. Here, you’ll find hands-on exhibits plus artifacts and events. Check out a flight simulator, real-life rockets and traveling exhibits like the 2,200-square foot Hubble Space Telescope exhibit. Keep an eye out for fun events like Cockpit Day, which gives you the chance to climb into the cockpit of a plane.

Dine Globally Without Leaving North Highlands

What do you want for dinner? Tacos? Barbecue? Thai food? Or maybe something harder to find like a great Cuban sandwich or kabobs. You can find all that and more in North Highlands. Popular restaurants in the area include Sol Cubano, Tacos El Rey, Aria Afghan Restaurant, House of Thai and Pit Stop BBQ.

Plenty of Parks

Families in North Highlands will love the diverse array of parks offered by the city. The North Highlands Recreation and Park District oversees nine parks, three gymnasiums and is also responsible for classes and programming. From playing basketball at Larchmont Park to walking beneath the shade of trees in the wonderfully grassy Sierra View Park, you’ll be sure to find your favorite spot to grill, picnic and get some fresh air.
