Home organization might already be on your list of New Year’s resolutions. But have you mapped out a plan to achieve your goal?
Nearly one in three Americans give up on their resolutions by the end of January. Instead of letting your resolution fall by the wayside, check out these tips for home organization resolutions as you enjoy a more orderly, clutter-free life:
1. For every gift you receive, get rid of one thing in your home.
Do you really need another decoration for your home, or a third black sweater? While you may have been the recipient of thoughtful gifts this season, all these things can slowly take over your home. Make it a goal to get rid of something you don’t need for every gift you receive. That way, you won’t be swimming in excess stuff around your home. One thing may not seem like much, but it’s going to add up. If you’re feeling extra ambitious and ready to clear the clutter, eliminate three things for every gift you receive or item you purchase.
2. Update your address book and keep in touch.
How many times has a Christmas card bounced back to you? Even if you eventually send it to the correct address, you always forget to update your original list. Be sure you’re up to date with friends and family and update their addresses accordingly. By updating your address book on a regular basis, none of your correspondence will go to waste. While you’re at it, make it a goal to keep in touch with the important people in your life.
3. Make sure everything in your house has a home.
Has there ever really been a place for those pens and pencils that roam around your home? This year, vow to organize your home and designate a space for each of your belongings. It might seem like no big deal to throw that book on the shelf in the living room, or set down a pair of headphones on the table, but be careful they don’t stay there. Don’t let it become a habit to dump things in random places — everything should have a home.
4. Clean out the pantry and refrigerator.
If you can’t remember the last time you did a complete scan of everything in your pantry and refrigerator, today’s the day. There’s a good chance something in there is expired, and it could be taking a toll on the rest of your food. If certain foods are kept too long, they could develop an unpleasant smell. As the new year begins, take some time to start fresh — literally — by cleaning out your pantry and fridge.
