Summer is a great time for starting new projects. The sun makes you feel great, the lower-key schedule gives you more time to focus on new things, and open windows blowing fresh air inspire people everywhere to take a little extra time for cleaning. We understand the importance of keeping your home decluttered, and think summer is the perfect time to start. Here are five of our favorite summertime decluttering projects.
Go through your off-season clothing
There's no better time to sort and organize your off-season clothing than when you're not wearing it. Decide which hats, scarves, sweaters, and other winter gear needs to be put into storage, donated, or tossed. Go through coat pockets for lost change and make notes of anything that needs to be replaced before it gets cold again.
Toss stuff you just don’t need any more
After a lot of online research, we’ve put together this list of things to go through and toss (or donate, when applicable) right now: unused coffee mugs, unneeded receipts, junk mail, expired beauty and grooming products, cables that have no purpose, unworn shoes, empty shampoo bottles, old medicine, and movies you haven't watched in more than six months.
Go through your bookshelves
It's easy to look past our bookshelves and let them stay dusty and unorganized because it's easier to just set books on top of other books instead of organizing, but taking a little time to go through them can be surprisingly relaxing. Remember the books that give you joy and let go of the ones that don't. Fun ways to organize: by size, by color (rainbow bookshelves are fantastic), or in horizontal stacks instead of setting them up vertically.
Make space underneath your kitchen sink
Let's be honest here: when was the last time you stopped to look under your kitchen sink for more than a few moments? It usually ends up as little more than a graveyard for cleaning products, junk, and piles of plastic bags. Taking the time to pull everything out and organize it not only makes you less anxious about opening the doors next time, it'll make the process of reaching for your cleaning products a little less daunting.
Rent a storage unit
We might be slightly biased, but there are a lot of benefits that come with renting a storage unit. If you rent one in the summer and use it to help reorganize your home it’ll help you make your way into the fall and winter holiday season with no extra stress.
Summer is a time for relaxing, enjoying friends and family, and taking control of yourself and your home through organization… but if you have too much stuff that you don’t want to get rid of, Storage Direct is happy to help find a storage solution tailored to your needs.
